Specialties
According to the framework of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP), Occupational Therapy practice spans several clinical specialties within rehabilitation. These specialties focus on restoring functional independence, improving participation in daily life, and enhancing quality of life for individuals with various health conditions.
Neurosciences
Occupational Therapy in Neurosciences focuses on helping individuals recover functional independence following neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. Through evidence-based interventions, therapists enhance motor control, cognition, coordination, and daily living skills, enabling patients to regain meaningful participation in life.
Pediatrics & Neonatology
This specialty supports the growth and development of infants and children, including those born prematurely or with developmental challenges. Occupational therapists work with conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and learning difficulties, focusing on play, sensory processing, feeding, fine motor skills, and school participation to help children achieve their full potential.
Musculoskeletal Sciences (Orthopedics)
Orthopedic occupational therapy focuses on restoring movement, strength, and functional ability in individuals with musculoskeletal injuries or conditions such as fractures, arthritis, joint replacements, and ligament injuries. Therapy aims to reduce pain, improve joint mobility, and help individuals safely return to their daily routines and occupations.
Hand Therapy
Hand therapy is a specialized field dedicated to the rehabilitation of the hand and upper extremity following injuries, surgeries, or neurological conditions. Occupational therapists design customized splints, therapeutic exercises, and functional training programs to restore hand strength, dexterity, and coordination essential for daily activities.
Rehabilitation Sciences
This specialty emphasizes holistic rehabilitation for individuals with temporary or permanent disabilities. Occupational therapists work within interdisciplinary teams to promote independence through functional training, assistive technology, environmental modifications, and community reintegration, enabling individuals to lead productive and meaningful lives.
Oncological Sciences
Occupational Therapy in oncology supports individuals undergoing cancer treatment or recovering from its effects. Therapists help manage fatigue, pain, cognitive changes, and physical limitations, enabling patients to maintain independence, adapt to lifestyle changes, and improve overall quality of life during and after treatment.
Geriatrics
Geriatric Occupational Therapy focuses on promoting healthy and active aging. Therapists assist older adults in managing age-related conditions such as dementia, arthritis, and mobility limitations by improving daily functioning, preventing falls, enhancing cognitive health, and maintaining independence in everyday activities.
Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Sciences
This specialty focuses on rehabilitation for individuals with heart and lung conditions such as cardiac surgery, heart disease, and chronic respiratory disorders. Occupational therapists guide patients through safe activity progression, energy conservation techniques, and lifestyle adaptations to help them return to daily life with improved endurance and confidence.
Mental Health
Occupational Therapy in mental health supports individuals experiencing psychological and emotional challenges such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and stress-related disorders. Through therapeutic activities, skill-building, and structured routines, therapists promote emotional well-being, social participation, and productive engagement in everyday life.
