Cyber Shield: Exploring Cyber Attacks and Awareness, Detection Using Darktrace

Two-Day Workshop on “Cyber Shield: Exploring Cyber Attacks and Awareness, Detection Using Darktrace”

The Department of CSE with specialization in Cyber Security, School of Computing, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tiruchirappalli, organized a two-day workshop titled “Cyber Shield: Exploring Cyber Attacks and Awareness, Detection Using Darktrace” on 12 and 13 August 2026.

The workshop was organized with the objective of providing students with practical exposure to cybersecurity concepts, real-world attack techniques, security tools, threat detection, cybersecurity challenges, and career opportunities. The sessions focused on connecting classroom learning with practical cybersecurity applications and helping students understand the skills expected in the cybersecurity industry. The two-day workshop provided students with a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical cybersecurity knowledge and practical industry-oriented skills.
Learning Outcomes

At the end of the two-day workshop, students were able to:

  • Understand fundamental cybersecurity threats, attacks, and defence mechanisms.
  • Identify major stages involved in a typical cyber attack.
  • Understand how attackers may identify vulnerabilities and attempt to gain unauthorized access.
  • Perform basic network reconnaissance concepts using Nmap in a controlled environment.
  • Understand the purpose and basic usage of Metasploit and msfconsole.
  • Gain introductory practical exposure to Burp Suite and web application security testing.
  • Understand brute-force attacks and appropriate defensive measures.
  • Explore cybersecurity challenges through TryHackMe.
  • Understand the fundamentals of AI-based threat detection using Darktrace.
  • Recognize the importance of behavioural analysis and anomaly detection in modern cybersecurity.
  • Understand the role of cybersecurity tools in SOC and security monitoring environments.
  • Explore various cybersecurity career roles and skill-development pathways.
  • Develop practical problem-solving and security-analysis skills.

The workshop featured Mr. Siva Tamilvanan, Founder of CyberNeds Solutions, and Mrs. Kanmani Suresh, Founder and CEO of Spark DigitAI and Co-founder of Spark Codes, who shared valuable industry insights and practical knowledge on cybersecurity tools, attack techniques, threat detection, and career opportunities.

The workshop was convened by Dr. R. Deebalakshmi, Associate Professor & Head, Cyber Security, who provided overall guidance and support for its successful organization. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Siron Anita Susan T. and Dr. R. Sheeba, Assistant Professors, who facilitated the sessions and hands-on activities, enabling students to gain meaningful technical and career-oriented exposure.
